When everyone talks about sustainable development, it is easy to forget that it is a goal and not something we are in. Changing society will require large investments, lots of work, dramatic changes and a lot of will. To motivate those investments, a future worth investing in is needed. But the images of the future we usually encounter are bleak, whether they come from politics, science or popular culture.
Building a positive and credible future picture is not something that is done in the blink of an eye. But somewhere you have to start and such a beginning is in your own subjective dream. What would I like the future to look like? To investigate what such shared dreams could look like, we invited to a workshop called Prototopia. As a boundary, we chose one of the most crucial sustainability challenges: the food system.
We, Maria Cosnier och Peter Wrenfelt - U&We, Joel Lindefors - Futerra, Mathias Gullbrandson - Blocks of Coral, and Olle Bjerkås, invited about 30 experts, food influencers, researchers, farmers and those involved in sustainability and food, to sketch images of a positive future of our food systems during three short sessions. The starting point was partly 1) the timeline that both the Paris Agreement and the EU's recently adopted climate law state, that it is the next ten years that the change must take place, and partly 2) the conclusions about the food system that the Eat Lancet states.
Our basic question was: “Sweden has a climate-neutral and regenerative agriculture and at the same time produces enough calories to feed a growing population. What does the system look like that makes it possible? ”
The sessions were based on the principle “Thinking right is great. To think freely is greater ”. The result of these three short sessions is the texts and images that are on future pages. It is not a collective dream or vision but a collage of dreams of five groups and 30 individuals. Thus, it contains contradictions and in some cases conflicts. There is also no claim whatsoever to constitute a comprehensive vision of the future, this is just an attempt that can hopefully inspire or provoke more dreams about the future.
The process has resulted in the texts and images published in this dream book along with a rendering of the method we used: Prototopia. All participants who so wish are included as co-authors. This process is a pilot, the idea is to be able to repeat what we do with different themes and participants.
Prototopia is a joint exploration with the aim of creating guiding stars that we all need, to be inspired for a positive future. The result is a short writing (freely licensed under creative commons CC BY-SA 4.0) that everyone can use.
The Borderland community will invest in a piece of land somewhere in Scandinavia that will be able to grow together with the annual Borderland Event, while creating possibilities for us to explore the land between dreams and realities throughout the year.
As it became obvious that the Borderland Event wouldn't happen in 2020, the community started to ping-pong alternative ways to explore the space between Dreams & Realities. Very quickly one call crystallised: “Yeah, let’s buy land!”
An Advice Process (AP) initiated by Emil Steen Ravbjerg resulted in a decision to form a project group, which would go forward with the BLL, and which would propose to an Extraordinary General Assembly of the Borderland Association (EGM) to direct 2020 membership fees towards the BLL and in the end 979 members of The Borderland gifted their membership fee for the BLL.
The purpose of The Borderland.land is to be a permanent space between dreams and realities. An all-year-round playground for members to prototype dreams through art, events, workshops, etc, dreams about what to do and who to be.
Through our acts, we are exploring how to perceive and serve each other, how to organize in order to solve problems, and how to use culture and community to create meaning in our lives.
The purpose of the association is to give people the opportunity to take the step to be active co-creators. We want to spread a basic trust in the human ability to take responsibility. We put value in the human right for each person to express themselves and encourage the individual and collective initiative.
The Borderland.land foundation shares spirit with The Borderland non-profit organization and the Burning Man community. Our community stretches across the world.
Mathias Gullbrandson is working with this initiative in the core group.
The Borderland is a place between dreams and realities there you prototype what you like to do and who you like to become. It is a community of 16000+ people and its growing rapidly. The biggests event is called The Borderland festival and gathers 4000 people for one week. All events is self-managed and co-created by members. Borderland is also a part of the Burning Man community.
We are prototyping a new way for humanity to treat itself. Through our acts, we are exploring how to perceive and serve each other, how to organize in order to solve problems, and how to use culture and community to create meaning in our lives.
By creating a temporary, visionary environment we are igniting the sparks of global change. It is here we gather strength, inspiration and knowledge to change the world.
It is our mission to influence the global community as a whole, to grow our tentacles, to radically include the open, the driven, the strong, the weak, the scared and the lonely.
We consider Borderland to be a premiere vessel for open and inclusive exploration of human creativity, spirituality and science in the Nordics and we invite the world to join in - and we hope to help every seed of potential in the individual to bloom within the dynamic of a participatory community.
The purpose of the association is to give people the opportunity to take the step from being passive consumers to active co-creators. We want to spread a basic trust in the human ability to take responsibility. We put value in the human right for each person to express themselves and encourage the individual initiative.
The association also strives to, as an organization, have as little central control as possible and let the initiative for organizational structure, practical problem solving and all creative and organizational content lie in the hands of each member.
The Borderland is also an event in end of July, somewhere in Scandinavia, but the community stretches across the world, with events and all around the year. It is within the purpose of this association to support the growth and interconnectivity of these events.
Mathias Gullbrandson took the initiative to The Borderland, is co-founder and co-creator.
We will create a story-driven brand, an online shop & guide for exploratory participatory experiences.
Our idea is to combine the forces of commercialism such as packaging, sales, brands and storytelling together with participant-driven imagination, role-play and alternative ways of thinking, to explore the future that we create together.
Our will is to experiment with the human self and our power to create; new idea-worlds, new identities and binding strong bonds. Strong bonds such as stories, economy, engagement, co-creation. We believe that the knowledge of creating magic worlds and identities should be spread.
Everybody has read books with worlds that you would love to walk into and explore. That is what NextHuman is about. It is a mobile web app with books where you become a character in the story, books with real life adventures and events you can join. Journey’s that will change you forever.
The app is a combination of an e-book app, an event-booking app and a travel app. There are three important parts in the concept:
1. Books: There are books with story worlds. Each book has a number of Chapters. Each chapter covers different subjects. Within a book there are weekly curated stories that add more and more pages to Chapters.
2. Events. A collection (marketplace) of events where producers can offer their events and users can sign-up and pay. These events are included in stories and in the books.
3. Characters. The user has a number of characters. These characters are guided by Game-masters in finding events and exploring NextHuman. GameMasters also help producers to package their experiences and adventures into Stories.
NextHuman.me is in development and will be launched 2021. Mathias Gullbrandson is founder.
